Thank you for requesting more info on the The Wizard of Reading Shows. My focus is on READING. I strive to provide you the best possible assemblies that meet your needs and fit within your budget. My name is Dean Alan and I specialize in educational assemblies that get kids excited about books and reading.
The Wizard of Reading Shows run 40-45 minutes and use magic, audience participation, story telling and other theatrical techniques to get the message of the importance of reading across to elementary school aged children.
The main show, The Marvelous Magical Stories Show, features a number of different books, which change from year to year. Typically, I try to give some brief biographical info on the author if possible, some background on the book, and then the story itself. Sometimes, I will use magic to illustrate the entire story. You must realize that in this program, when I use magic to illustrate a story, it takes on a different context than just showing someone a trick. It is a unique way to illustrate or act out the story from the book. And because magic is a visual art form, the audience remembers the story and magic long afterwards. Sometimes, I will use magic to emphasis one part of the story but leave the rest open for the audience to discover by checking the book out at the library. I also share my personal story of struggling as a child to read. I was a poor reader in school and in fact, had almost zero reading comprehension, and then one day I became an avid reader with a personal library of thousands of books. I tell them the simple secret I used to embrace the world of reading. There are a few of the books I’m expecting to use this year: The Invention of Hugo Cabret, The Fantastic Flying Books of Mr. Morris Lessmore, and The Magician’s Elephant, just to name a few.
In the Wizard of Reading Shows,
BOOKS are the Stars of the Show!
In 2019-20, I will only be offering my Wizard of Reading present-The Seusstacular Reading Show about Dr. Seuss books. There is several versions of the show available. Because of this I can do a daytime assembly and an evening assembly and not repeat any material.
The Seuss Shows are assemblies where I share the stories and characters from the books of Dr. Seuss. It’s my most popular program and I am constantly adding material to create new versions each year. Some of the past versions of the show have been called: The Reading Seuss-a-thon, The Very Seussical Reading Show, and The Seuss-A-Bration Show, The Seuss-tacular Reading Show, If I Ran The Show & The All You Need Is A Book Show.
This year the newest version of the show, will debut in January 2020 and is called The Seusstacular Reading Show. I’ll be adding new routines as well as bringing back some of the older material which will be new to many students. Just to give you an example of material from past years, the following is a partial list of stories that I’ve covered in other shows: 1 Fish 2 Fish Red Fish Blue Fish, The Cat In the Hat, Horton Hears a Who, Horton and The Kwuggerbug, Green Eggs and Ham, The Bippilo Seed, Gustav the Goldfish, IF I Ran The Zoo, If I Ran the Circus, I Can Read With My Eyes Shut, The Sneetches, How The Grinch Stole Christmas, The 500 Hundred Hats of Bartholomew Cubbins, McElligot’s Pool, What Pet Should I Get, Scrambled Eggs Super, The Lorax and many many more .
One of the wonderful things about the Seuss shows is that Dr. Seuss stories are so beloved by everyone that teachers get as involved in the show as the kids. In fact, I usually try and bring one teacher up during the course of the show and feature them. Last years show had a routine in which I dressed two kids up like Thing 1 and Thing 2. Well, as fate would have it, I was at a school in which two of the teachers had dressed up like Thing 1 and Thing 2 on their own. So THEY got that coveted spot in the assembly and the kids treated them like rock stars the rest of the day!
Many schools pick my Seuss Show for Read Across America Day and/or Read Across America Week. I can tell you that Read Across America Day, which is Dr. Seuss’s Birthday, books a year in advance. But I do offer the Seuss program ALL YEAR LONG! So you could have my show during a Literacy Night, Book Fair, or other fun Family Night event!!!

For years, magic was thought to be something for kids. But in the past 30 years, magic has been embraced by scientists, mathematicians, speakers, motivators, sales people, doctors, therapists and educators. The reason why all these various fields have gotten involved in magic is that they discovered magic brings out the natural curiosity in people. Whether child or adult, magic has a way of pulling people in. It also causes individuals to think and perceive differently.
Therapists teach magic to patients to help with their motor skills and to help increase their self confidence. Sales people have discovered that magic can help convey simple messages in an entertaining manner. Teachers and educators have found that their students curiosity is engaged with magic tricks. And for folks like myself, I can take a simple story and use magic to make parts of the story or the whole thing come to life. Magic is a powerful tool that can be used to communicate ideas, concepts and messages with people. That’s why I use magic.
